What Is Tri-Layer Brazing in Carbide-Tipped Saw Blades?

Tri-Layer brazing, also known as sandwich brazing, is a brazing structure used to bond carbide tips to the steel plate of a circular saw blade.

Instead of using a single brazing alloy layer, Tri-Layer brazing typically uses a silver-copper-silver structure. In simple terms, a copper layer is placed between two silver-based brazing alloy layers, creating a sandwich-like joint between the carbide tip and the saw blade plate.

This structure helps improve bonding strength, absorb stress, and support more stable cutting performance under demanding conditions.

Why Brazing Quality Matters

A carbide-tipped saw blade combines two very different materials: a hard carbide cutting tip and a tough steel blade plate.

During heating, cooling, and cutting, these materials expand and react differently. If the brazed joint cannot properly absorb stress, the carbide tip may become more vulnerable to cracking, loosening, or failure during use.

This is why brazing is more than just a method of attaching the tip to the blade plate. It plays an important role in shock absorption, stress relief, impact resistance, and long-term blade reliability.

How Tri-Layer Brazing Works

In a Tri-Layer brazed joint, the silver-based alloy layers help create strong bonding with both the carbide tip and the steel plate. The copper layer in the middle acts as a softer stress-relief layer.

This middle layer helps absorb stress caused by thermal expansion differences between carbide and steel, especially during cooling after brazing and during repeated cutting impact.
